In flashback, it's revealed that John Perseus IX was a tech-based villain defeated by the Umbrella Academy when they were still a team, motivated to exert control over the city out of jealousy about how the Umbrella "freaks" had been embraced as heroes.

John's true goal is to locate the Hotel Oblivion - a surreal prison in which Sir Reginald Hargreeves kept the Umbrella Academy's villains - and free his father John Perseus IX. It turns out that Perseus has committed all his resources to creating his own televator - a TARDIS-like device capable of teleportation and dimensional travel. The nature of these experiments is revealed in The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, when Tor hires Number Five to investigate the Perseus Corporation and uncover John Perseus X's secrets.

Tor, a large-headed member of the board, John reveals he's recently acquired enough money to buy out their shares, firing Tor and stating that the company will be pursuing a new series of experiments. Questioned by his board of directors, it becomes clear that John has been siphoning money from the company to support trips to India, rebuilding the downtown area to his own specifications, and mysterious research and development (suggested to include "rocket sandals.") Tiring of questions from Mr. Related: Who is Murder Magician, The Umbrella Academy's Deadly Villain?įirst appearing in The Umbrella Academy: Dallas #2, John Perseus X begins as something of a wannabe Bruce Wayne, having just returned from a mysterious tip to Mumbai. This meeting is apparently coincidental - Perseus is at a gig played by Kraken and Vanya, and throws a drink at the stage - since John Perseus IX is mentioned as still being CEO of the Perseus Corporation, and it was his arrest and imprisonment that truly set his son onto a collision course with the Umbrella Academy. John Perseus X is the head of the Perseus Corporation and, as suggested in the author notes for The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, the latest in a lineage stretching back to the Perseus of Ancient Greek myth. Canonically, John's first appearance is in the short story " Anywhere But Here," in which a teenage Kraken punches him so hard that he has to have his jaw wired.
